Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology is the only academic Bulgarian periodical, specialized in the field of the above substance-related geological sciences. Its establisher and first chief editor is the distinguished Bulgarian mineralogist and geochemist – Acad. Ivan Kostov. The scientific scope of the periodical is defined still in its first issue – vol. 1, 1975: Regional, theoretical and methodical problems, based on generic nature observations and experimental studies. More specifically: a) lithosphere and hydrosphere geochemistry, biogeochemistry and geochemistry of the organic matter, isotopic geochemistry and geochronology, experimental geochemistry; b) crystallochemical features of the minerals – isomorphism, polymorphism and morphology, crystal habits, crystal growth and behavior, physico-chemical mineral forming conditions, physical properties of minerals, mineral systematics, mineral deposits, experimental mineralogy; c) petrology of igneous and metamorphic rocks, metasomathic and related processes connected to ore deposition.
Responding to the increased social interest, last 10 years the periodical also publishes papers in the field of geoecology, concerning specific geochemical and mineralogical aspects of the environmental protection.
Only original scientific studies are published in Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology. The periodical is targeted on scientist from the listed scientific fields, practicing economic geologists, as well as scientists form the fields of chemistry, metallurgy, silicate-porcelain and other industries.
Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology is a successor of the Bulletin of the Geological Institute, BAS (vol. 1, 1951 – vol. 15, 1966) and Bulletin of the Geological Institute, series Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrography (vol. 16, 1967 – vol. 23, 1974). Starting from the year 2002 (vol. 39) the periodical is also an official issue of the Bulgarian Mineralogical society (member of the EMU and IMA).
Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology is abstracted in Mineralogical Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Geological Abstracts and Referativnyy Zhurnal.
Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology is open for publications from both Bulgarian and foreign authors. The scientific quality of the publications is guaranteed by the 4 step selection process: peer review, public discussion, selection by the editorial board, approval by the scientific council of the Geological Institute. The periodical is issued in English. Papers in Bulgarian (with English abstract) are allowed only as exceptions.
Special issues of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology publish materials of specific conferences, workshops and other scientific meetings, like GEODE, IGCP, etc.
The periodical is distributed in 30 countries by the department of library exchange of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, as well as direct sales in Bulgarian scientific book-stores. Limited number of current and back hardcopy issues can also be purchased from the editorial board.
Recently Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology is published with the financial support of the Bulgarian National Science Fund.
